In den letzten anderthalb Jahrhunderten ist die bedeutende Entfaltung der Geisteswissenschaften in den deutschsprechenden Ländern maßgeblich durch jene Universitätsreform ermöglicht worden, die mit dem Namen Humboldts verknüpft wird. Seit den sechziger Jahren nimmt man auch in der Bundesrepublik von dieser Universität Abschied; die jetzige Hochschulgesetzgebung setzt auch eine äußerliche Zäsur. Zugleich setzt sich auch im Bereich geisteswissenschaftlicher Arbeit bei Basisaufgaben wie der Materialsammlung und der Edition die "Forschung" durch, das heißt die langfristig organisierte und institutionell abgesicherte wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit. Im politischen (...) wie im kirchlichen Bereich wird die unmittelbare Weitergabe und Darstellung von Tradition immer stärker entmächtigt, und so können wissenschaftlich distanzierte, kompensatorische Hinweise auf Tradition - etwa in den großen kulturhistorischen Ausstellungen - Bedeutung bekommen. Eine Forschungspolitik wird auch gegenüber den Geisteswissenschaften nötig, die ihre Grenzen kennt und die geisteswissenschaftliche Arbeit, die in ihrem Kern Individualforschung war und bleiben muß, nicht durch Übertragung unangemessener forschungspolitischer Direktiven aus anderen wissenschaftlichen Bereichen stört. These lectures constitute the earliest version of Hegel's Philosophy of Right, one of the most influential works in Western political theory. They introduce a notion of civil society that has proven of inestimable importance to diverse philosophical and social agendas. This transcription of the lectures, which remained in obscurity until 1982, presents the philosopher's social thought with clarity and boldness. It differs in some significant respects from Hegel's own published version of 1821. Nowhere does Hegel make plainer the difference between (...) his concept of objective spirit and traditional concepts of natural law or offer a more prominent treatment of the key notion of recognition. His description of poverty is more forceful and his critique of existing social conditions more thorough than in the published edition, which had to satisfy the Prussian censor. The strictly limited powers of the monarch are more clearly delineated in the Heidelberg lectures, and the arguments for a bicameral legislature are more explicit. Hegel formulates in a more dynamic way his understanding of the relationship between rationality and actuality--the rational is not what exists but what is coming into being--and sets forth more simply and clearly the central themes of his political philosophy--freedom, justice, and community. The Heidelberg lectures are an indispensable resource for understanding the edition of 1821 and an invaluable supplement to one of the great classics of political philosophy. (shrink)

The author stresses that his approach is not a philosophical one, but that he is describing art as it has historically emerged. Hans-Georg Gadamer, however, says in his preface that precisely this letting itself be shown and demonstration is “phenomenology”. In effect the author applies Greek and European arthistory to completed creations, placing his main emphasis, as befits an historian of music, on music and poetry. Poetry is that outstanding mode of speech that “names” things: what is becomes aware of (...) itself in man; in this way it can come out into the light and be named in its “it is”—even through a single word. This naming partakes of God’s act of creation, but must accept what is given. Music, on the other hand, is attributed to the angels, who, like birds, sing and fly. Music rises above the earthly by turning away from a sensation of what is given to relations that are determined by numbers, namely the linking together of notes according to octaves, fifths and fourths, then rhythm and metre. Architecture, that “houses” us in the world, is briefly touched upon. Of fine art it is said that it takes sections of what is given and sheds light on them. The author bases this view of art on a wilful interpretation of the Aristotelian doctrine of time as the number of movement: it is this link with numbers that distinguishes time from space, that can admittedly be measured, but not counted, and can therefore properly be allocated to sensation. For Max Weber it was still a matter of course to understand the process of rationalization in occidental history as an outcrop of our modern world; and the classical writers of social theory have described the new reflective treatment of tradition and the differentiation of the spheres of life more exactly. In the fifties the “modernization” of societies was presented with neutral detachment, and Arnold Gehlen was able to maintain that rationalization in our “post-history” was proceeding in crystallized forms, but (...) was no longer able to make a creative critical appraisal of its own underlying suppositions. Subversive criticism tried to unmask reason as the will to power and was thus able to proclaim the post-modern age. It is the complicity between these conservative and anarchic forces that Habermas is here opposing, taking the project of modernity as something incomplete that is still waiting for completion. It seems that Heidegger's thought is subject to the dubious destiny of inspiring fat commentaries. However, Colombo's has this advantage over many of its counterparts, viz., it is more a true study than a reiteration. This is so in three important respects. First, a systematization of the thought of Heidegger is attempted, and, in so far as this is possible, rather successfully achieved. The book is divided into five parts, whose continuity follows only in part the development of Heidegger. Happily, (...) the author, unimpressed by the superficial schema of a Kehre, articulates a treatment which is independent from any simple genetic explanation. The five parts are: Design and Depth of Finitude, Beyond Form, Manifestation of Being, Man and Nothingness, and The Impotence of Thought. The systematization rests on an excellent discernment of themes in the thought of Heidegger. Instead of being content with the proposition that Heidegger is but a single theme thinker, Colombo rescues a variety of themes from the web of Heidegger's thought. This he does not by formulating such themes in classical or purely technical terms, but by showing their import and relevance relative to other historical themes in Western thought. Surprisingly enough, the result is not an absorption of Heidegger by the tradition, but rather a deepening of classical themes, and a freeing of shades missing in the Heideggerian synthesis. However this is done with such care that the focused topics are not taken out of context, or even hermeneutically overcome. On the contrary, they are very properly accented in their own contours. As befits a good study of this type, footnotes are the best part of the work. Colombo discourses with a multitude of authors, clearing lines of interpretation, and, more importantly, bringing forth ideas generated by Heidegger's philosophy. By being free from the poetic spell that the German philosopher casts upon those who study him, Colombo has written a philosophical book showing more clearly than others the scope and the idiosyncrasies of his subject-author. The results are impressive, and they place this young Italian professor, together with Pöggeler and Birault, at the top of the list of Heidegger's interpreters.—A. M. (shrink)

Hegel's aim in this work is to interpret the varied phenomena of Nature from the standpoint of a dialectical logic. Those who still think of Hegel as a merely a priori philosopher will here find abundant evidence that he was keenly interested in and very well informed about empirical science.

The book presents the most relevant theories of truth (correspondence, semantic, deflational, pragmaticist, coherentist, constructivist, evidential), with the emphasis of analytical approaches. The author develops a version of the realist correspondence concept of truth while distinguishing various criteria of truth. He is skeptical in regard of any, complete or certain truth but he does not accept epistemic skepticism either, but argues for a moderate realism where objective orientation towards truth suffices as catching (ever) more truth than falsity.
